I was so proud today at church--whoever chose the songs that we sang this morning picked "Nearer My God to Thee"--the Titanic song on the 100th anniversary of the sinking! Speaking of the 100th anniversary, last night's Titanic commemoration party was a great success! We had so much fun with our good friends. I spent this week getting ready for the big day. Preparations included getting the trivia questions together and finding some vintage-looking Hershey bars (available at Cracker Barrel) for the trivia prizes.

I also did some Titanic-themed decorating around the house using all of my Titanic books (thanks to Mom for the COOL Titanic sticker book!!).

And I made sure that my White Star Line t-shirt was clean and ready to go.

One of my favorite things I found for the party was this pack of White Star Line napkins--aren't they cool?! I ordered these from the Titanic Historical Society. They added the perfect touch to our dinner. Speaking of dinner, we had big plans that Greg would cook like crazy all afternoon on Saturday while I was at work . . . but unfortunately people kept dying, and Greg's boss was out of town, so Greg had to take care of everything. So, Greg and I ended up getting home at about the same time just a little over an hour before everyone arrived for the party. It got a little crazy in the kitchen, but we managed to get everything on the table shortly after our guests arrived. (Greg gets credit for doing most of the cooking while I finished cleaning up the rest of the house.)

The evening's menu included items from the last dinner on the Titanic served in the first class dining room: Chateau potatoes, creamed carrots, asparagus, and salmon (there were A LOT of other things on the menu, but we just picked out some of the most delicious-sounding items to make). We also had a couple of items from the second class dinner menu: curry chicken and cheese biscuits. Greg had the same idea as one of the people Richard works with: that we should serve ICEBERG lettuce salad--hahahaha! But we had so many veggies, we ended up not having salad too. We told everyone about the iceberg lettuce idea though, and they all thought it was very funny.

The only food item missing from the above picture was this, the stuffed salmon. The salmon served on the Titanic was poached, but we served our favorite stuffed salmon from Sam's Club instead. The food was a BIG hit! (Instead of wine, we served sparkling cider and Coke products--everyone seemed okay with our substitutions.)

We're not sure what the kids on the Titanic ate, but the cute kids at our party, Connor and Emma, ate McDonald's Happy Meals which came with these cool Green Lantern masks--Emma was happy to show hers off.

After dinner it was trivia time! I love this picture of our friends, from left to right, Susan, Jen, and Laura. Susan looks so surprised about something!

And here are Rose and Chris showing off their trivia sheets.

And here is John (married to Jen) studiously working on his trivia sheet. (During the trivia game, Greg and the Spikes were keeping the kiddos busy upstairs with some games and TV shows. Poor Lily was hiding from everyone.) Titanic Trivia was a big hit. After our trivia game, we watched the 1958 film "A Night to Remember," which is considered to be the most historically-accurate film about the Titanic. During the movie I served dessert--from the first class menu on April 14--French vanilla ice cream and eclairs! It was such a fun evening, and everyone seemed to have a great time. I'm glad that we could get together with our friends to remember such a significant event in history. I will be 77 years old on the 150th anniversary of the Titanic, so maybe I can plan another commemoration party then!

What a fun party! I think you probably will have a party in another 50 years. Do you think you'll still be blogging then? :)
Looks like a most perfect evening, Tiff. The food looks delicious! Way to go Greg on the Titanic centerpiece. I bet everyone had a wonderful time! We think we'll do Titanic Trivia for FHE tonight. Thanks for the report and pictures! Love, Mom
