I Love Holiday Weekends!

Happy Labor Day weekend everyone, and Happy #3 Birthday to Riley! I wish I could be there for a party, but I'm sure you guys are having a great time. I am looking forward to having a day off tomorrow. Our original plan amongst the grad. students was to go to Lincoln Springs Resort (the place with the giant Lincoln) for some Civil War-themed paintball, but we called them, and unfortunately they are redoing their paintball area right now, so it is closed. We decided that we'll go have a picnic at Lake Charleston instead. It's only about seven miles away, and supposedly it is very pretty out there. It wouldn't feel like Labor Day without a picnic!

Church was really nice today, and all of the people there are doing their best to make me feel right at home. One lady that was there today who I hadn't met before said she's allergic to corn, so she's going to have to move away. This definitely is not a good place to live if you're allergic to corn! After church today I crashed and had a nap for about 2 hrs. Why was I so tired, you may wonder? Well, it's our neighbor Rodney's fault! Rodney definitely has issues. The other night there was a paper on our door inviting us to Rodney's 21st birthday party. We did not attend the party, but felt like we were right there because we could hear everything. There was much alcohol being consumed, and the next day the ground was covered with beer bottles. It seems that Rodney has decided to live on the crazy side now that he's 21. Last night, or I guess it was this morning, at about 4:30 a.m., Alyson heard a girl outside shrieking, saying "Stop! You're hurting me!!" I must be a heavier sleeper than I thought because I didn't wake up, but Alyson came in and woke me up wondering what we should do. The shrieking continued for a while, and after listening for a few minutes, we realized that it wasn't an emergency situation. The shrieking girl was obviously quite heavily intoxicated, and it seems she caught Rodney, whom she claimed was her boyfriend, with a girl from Germany. The drunk girl had all kinds of interesting things to say about Germany. We tried to go back to sleep, but the screaming, shouting, swearing, crying, and yelling went on for about an hour. Anyway, by the time I got back to sleep it didn't seem like very long before I had to wake up. At least I was able to take a nap this afternoon.

After my nap I went over to Dan's to learn how to play the guitar (I'm not very musically inclined, so I think it would take a really, really, really long time for me to become good at playing the guitar, and it would take a lot of practice, and I don't have a lot of time right now to practice, but maybe someday I will), then I went over to Dr. Small's house to take care of her kitties while she's out of town. She has one outside cat, Dinah, then three inside cats: Stencil, Bear, and Gwen. Stencil was a little grumpy, but the others seemed happy to see me. Actually, they probably weren't happy to see me, they were just happy to get some food. After I got back, Alyson and I made a delicious spaghetti dinner, and now we're just relaxing for the evening. I hope Rodney has worked out all of his issues because I really, really don't want to hear anymore about his messed-up personal life! Hmmm, I bet Rodney didn't think that this many people would ever know all of his secrets! :-)
