The Big Week

I had been a little frustrated that my dream job at the Church History Museum fell through due to the current hiring freeze, but then something wonderful happened on Friday. My other dream job became available! There are two park ranger openings at the Abraham Lincoln Home in Springfield! I would love to work there, especially during Lincoln's 200th birthday. So I'm getting my application ready and hoping that something will work out. The position would only last for six months, but it would be a freaking awesome six months. Greg and I were seriously contemplating purchasing the Dr. Mudd home here in Athens, but since our future plans are kind of uncertain, we decided to stay where we are. The best thing about renting is that you're not tied down to or responsible for any real estate. And, we've put up some fun decorations around here to make it feel like home. I realized I haven't put up any pictures of our house yet, so here are a few that I took right before Christmas:

This is our humongous living room/dining room/game room/office.

This is the "Lincoln Corner" with all of our Abraham Lincoln books and several pictures of him.

And here is our retro kitchen. You can't get the full retro effect from this picture, but you can see the cute window valence we put up.

As long as I'm putting up pictures I forgot to post earlier, here is my December project. Linda Norbut Suits had her mom's sewing table that she wanted to have refinished so it looked a little more updated. I went ahead and refinished it for her and she came and picked it up before Christmas. She was very pleased with how it turned out. When she came up here to get the table, she and I went to lunch at a funny place on the outskirts of Athens called the Boar's Nest. I know that the name doesn't sound particularly appealing, but they actually have really good food. This is a big week coming up! On Wednesday evening (which also happens to be Dad's birthday!) I will be going down to Charleston to stay with the Stowells who have graciously agreed to let me invade their home. Then on Thursday I will go to EIU and take my oral exams--the LAST requirement before I receive my degree. HOOOORAY!!! I will be all done (if I pass my exams)! This is also a big week because the two-night four-hour season premier of "24" begins tonight, and "Bones" starts again on Thursday. Good times. One week after the influenza ordeal, Greg and I keep finding little spots of my Gatorade/chocolate pudding delightfulness in rather strange places. I got it on envelopes, computer paper, Greg's computer, a can of sauerkraut in the kitchen--pretty much everywhere. I'm not quite sure how it traveled to so many places. Yucky. It's been really cold here, and it's supposed to get even colder this week! Yesterday Greg and I were going to go to Springfield, but then when we went outside we discovered that the ground was covered with a sheet of ice. The parking lot at the funeral home was literally an ice skating rink, so we skated across it to the post office. Our animal children are very funny. Lily started stealing candy off of the kitchen table and giving it to the dogs, so we had to get a spray bottle to teach her that the table is off-limits :-) Her favorite toy is this ribbon that was around a blanket that Mom and Dad gave us for Christmas. It's so funny--she'll carry the ribbon all over the house, and she tries to take it to bed with her at night. She tosses it in the air and then pounces on it, then she'll roll all around on it. She and the dogs like to chase each other around, and they seem to be getting along better these days. Well, that's the latest from Athens. It's almost time for "24" to start!
